Since 2007 Advocates for Asylum has been matching refugees with non-refugees to teach each other language skills.
In 2008 we began offering larger classes, while still maintaining our tutoring program, which is integral for assessment of progress and direct feedback in order to assure there is personal improvement of language skills. Over the course of two years, Advocates for Asylum has taught over 200 asylum seekers in the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv area.
There are currently thirty-six refugees studying and ten non-refugees teaching and learning. Below, you can see photographs from last year's English tutoring end-of-the-year party. See more pictures here.
We are seeking English and Hebrew volunteer tutors and teachers on an ongoing bases. Tutoring is currently in Jerusalem, though we are expanding to Tel Aviv and Eilat when possible. Tutoring takes place at a location and time of convenience for the student and tutor, with the assistance of our language director, Keith, if logistical difficulties arise. Please send resumes to Keith at tutoring@asylumseekers.org
In addition to one-on-one tutoring, we offer classes at Holzer's Bookstore, which has generously lent us its classroom once a week. We teach English on Wednesday evenings at 17:30. We also have a smaller class meeting at Rehov Niviim 74 on Tuesday evenings at 19:00. If you are interested in taking part as a student or a teacher, please write to Mollie at MollieGerver@asylumseekers.org or call Mollie at: 0503241522.
